Except Spurs, Here Are the Other Clubs That Ended Their Trophy Drought

Tottenham Hotspur won the 2024-2025 Europa League trophy. Spurs managed to defeat Manchester United 1-0 in the final, which took place at San Mames, Bilbao on Thursday (22/5).

Hotspur’ only goal was scored by Brennan Johnson (42′). This was Johnson’s fifth goal in the Europa League this season.

The 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final on Thursday (22/5) brought an end to Spurs’ long wait for European glory. The North London team had been waiting 41 years to achieve success at the European level.

The last time Hotspur won a continental trophy was in the 1983-1984 season. Back then, the Europa League did not exist and was still known as the UEFA Cup. In addition to the 1983-1984 season, Spurs also won the UEFA Cup in the 1971-1972 season.

This Europa League victory guaranteed Spurs a place in the 2025-2026 Champions League, despite being in 17th place in the Premier League standings at the end of week 37.

Besides Spurs, here are three other clubs that ended their trophy drought after decades without winning a championship.

Crystal Palace

Palace also made history in the FA Cup competition. In the final that took place on Saturday (17/5) at Wembley Stadium in London, Palace defeated last year’s FA Cup runner-up Manchester City 1-0.

Palace’s success in winning the 2024-2025 FA Cup ended a 119-year wait for the West London club. Prior to this period, Palace had reached the FA Cup final twice, in the 1989-1990 and 2015-2016 seasons. Unfortunately, Palace suffered defeats in both of those finals.

Bologna FC

Two days before Palace’s FA Cup victory, Bologna FC also ended a trophy drought that lasted over half a century. After waiting 51 years to become champions of the Coppa Italia, Bologna reclaimed the trophy in the 2024-2025 season.

Bologna defeated AC Milan 1-0 in the Coppa Italia final on May 15, which took place at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Prior to the 2024-2025 season, Bologna had also won the Coppa Italia twice, in the 1969-1970 and 1973-1974 seasons.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United waited for seven decades, or 70 years, to taste the sweetness of a domestic major trophy again. After last winning the FA Cup in the 1954-1955 season, Newcastle’s history in the League Cup, FA Cup, or Premier League often ended in failure.

For example, in the 2022-2023 League Cup season, Newcastle successfully reached the final. Unfortunately, they were defeated 0-2 by Manchester United in the final match.

However, in the 2024-2025 season, Newcastle finally ended their 70-year wait for a championship with a victory in the League Cup. In the final, The Magpies defeated Liverpool FC 2-1 on March 16 at Wembley Stadium in London.
