Real Madrid C.F. is a Spanish professional football (soccer) club located in Madrid, renowned for its all-white uniforms that earned them the moniker “Los Blancos.” It is widely recognized as one of the most famous teams globally.

The origins of Real Madrid can be traced back to Football Club Sky, a Madrid-based team established in 1897. In 1902, the club was officially founded and later joined the Royal Spanish Football Federation in 1909. Before settling in their current home, Real Madrid C.F. played at multiple locations. However, thanks to the ambitious efforts of their president Santiago Bernabéu, their iconic stadium was constructed and opened its doors in 1947. With a capacity of over 80,000 spectators, the Bernabéu also hosted the final match of the 1982 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup.

The European Cup was established in the 1955-1956 season, featuring a prestigious lineup of clubs who had previously won their respective country’s league championship. In its inaugural year, Real Madrid emerged as the victor, defeating French club Stade de Reims in the final.

This marked the beginning of an unprecedented era of European dominance for the team, a feat that has yet to be replicated. The likes of Ferenc Puskás, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Paco Gento, Hector Rial, and Miguel Muñoz led Real Madrid to victory in the first five European Cups consecutively. Notably, their performance in the 1960 final against West German team Eintracht Frankfurt – a 7-3 triumph for Real – is widely regarded as one of the greatest club displays ever seen. In total, Real Madrid boasts an impressive record of 15 European Cup/Champions League titles, surpassing any other team by far.

Real Madrid C.F. holds the record for winning the most Spanish top-division (La Liga) championships with a total of 36 titles. The club has also dominated in other competitions, securing victory 20 times in the Copa del Rey and 13 times in the Supercopa de España (Spanish Super Cup). Additionally, they have claimed the UEFA Cup twice, consecutively in 1985 and 1986.

Real Madrid C.F. main local rival is Atlético Madrid, but their greatest rivalry is with FC Barcelona. The tension between these two football clubs, representing Spain’s largest cities, was heightened by their competition in the 1950s to secure Di Stéfano. Despite initially considering a deal with Barcelona, he ultimately signed with Madrid, contributing to Real’s dominance in the 1950s and ’60s. El Clásico (“The Classic”) matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid are widely watched throughout Spain as they embody the ongoing political and cultural tensions between Castilian (Real) and Catalonian (Barcelona) Spain.

Since the late 1990s, Real Madrid C.F. has been known for attracting top foreign players to the club, nicknamed galácticos or “superstars.” This group often included the world’s most expensive players, such as David Beckham, Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Kaká, Cristiano Ronaldo, and James Rodriguez. Notable players from this time also include Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas. Most recently, Kylian Mbappé joined Real Madrid after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in the 2023-24 season.
